A Home Away from Home

Several weeks ago, a dear family friend of mine suffered a devastating stroke. For a few days, his family members didn’t know if he would survive this event. Thankfully, he did. Now, he is undergoing the slow recovery process in a nursing home. Since his stroke, his family has been amazing. They visit him daily at the nursing facility. They have even decorated his room in an effort to make him feel like he is at home. If your loved one has recently been admitted to a nursing home, don’t despair. You may be able to help your loved one adjust to this living situation better by being supportive. On this blog, you will discover the ways to make your loved one’s transition to a nursing home easier.

How to Make Sure That an Assisted Living Facility Will Meet the Needs of Your Senior

Johnny Rodriguez

One of the most important factors to take into consideration when looking for an assisted living facility for your loved ones is to determine if the facility has the medical care that your loved one will need. One of the primary purposes of assisted living is that your loved one can continue to enjoy life while also receiving medical care when necessary.

Medical Equipment

Make sure that the facility has the medical equipment that your loved one will need. The staff will also need to be properly trained on how to use the equipment. Then, if there is a medical emergency, the assisted living facility will be able to attend to the needs of your loved one. Make sure to ask the staff about what plans they have in case of an emergency. They must also always have first aid supplies on hand.

An important part of medical care is incontinence supplies. The assisted living facility should always be prepared to clean any messes. They will need medical carts that will allow them to transport sanitation and cleaning supplies easily.

Care-Giver to Patient Ratio

You'll want to make sure that there is a great caregiver-to-patient ratio so that your senior can have their needs met. For example, you will need caregivers to question your senior about how they are feeling and whether they are experiencing any symptoms that are concerning. Also, when the assisted living facility is understaffed, the staff members will be stressed. Pay attention to the attitude of the staff members and how friendly they are as well.

Safety and Security Measures

Find out about the safety and security measures taken by the assisted living facility. For example, the assisted living facility should have secure locks and surveillance equipment. This is important if your loved one is suffering from cognitive decline and there is a concern that they might become confused and leave.

To make sure that the assisted living facility is safe, there will need to be other safety features in place, such as handrails and anti-slip mats. Ask if you can conduct a tour of the facility so you can determine if it is safe enough. Once you have conducted a thorough investigation, you will be able to feel more confident that the assisted living facility will be able to meet the needs of your loved one and you will know that they will be safe.
