A Home Away from Home

Several weeks ago, a dear family friend of mine suffered a devastating stroke. For a few days, his family members didn’t know if he would survive this event. Thankfully, he did. Now, he is undergoing the slow recovery process in a nursing home. Since his stroke, his family has been amazing. They visit him daily at the nursing facility. They have even decorated his room in an effort to make him feel like he is at home. If your loved one has recently been admitted to a nursing home, don’t despair. You may be able to help your loved one adjust to this living situation better by being supportive. On this blog, you will discover the ways to make your loved one’s transition to a nursing home easier.

Hot Summer? Rainy Day? Play Inside!

Johnny Rodriguez

Children benefit greatly from the time they spend outside on a playground. Playgrounds provide "crucial and vital opportunities for . . . emotional, social, motor, and cognitive development." However, conditions outside can create an unsafe environment for your family, especially during extreme heat and thunderstorms. For this reason, parents should consider investing in indoor playground equipment for their children to keep them safe and busy this summer. Below is a list of four standard play structures that you can modify to fit your household's specific needs.

The Ball Pit

Ball pits are fun and give your kids a great work out as they wade through the colorful plastic balls, and the different colors engage your child's senses. You can create a ball pit in your home by purchasing an inflatable pool or a play pen, and then fill the inside with the plastic balls. The children will have countless hours of indoor fun with this one.

The Slide

Climbing the ladder to reach the top of the slide provides children with exercise that strengthens their leg muscles. Sliding down the slide is just that extra bit of fun added on for good measure! Parents can purchase a variety of plastic, safe slide structures for their children, depending on how much space one's home allows. There are also inflatable structures to add some bouncy fun.

The Swing

By adding a swing set, your kids get to kick and stretch their legs out to see how high they can go (but not too high!) and you can enjoy it for yourself. There are different ways you can incorporate a swing. You can purchase a set that stands alone, purchase and attach a swing to a door beam or ceiling beam already present in your home, or you can build a beam to attach the swing to.

The Rock Wall

Rock walls are great because you can use a screwdriver to attach the rocks to a sturdy wall without taking up a huge amount of space. Your kids will engage their arm muscles as they pull themselves up, as well as their leg muscles when they climb. Having the rocks cover more than one wall can also provide an extra challenge.

Make time indoors fun and exciting for your household by using familiar play structures to create an indoor playground. Adjust them for safety and monitor how your kids play on them. Enjoy creating your indoor playground!
